Rediscovering bodyweight training
Without realising it, I think I’ve always been fascinated by gymnastics. From seeing a boy in my class at secondary school perform a back-flip in PE through to seeing clips of the dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder performing routines on the gymnastic rings, I’ve always wanted to do the same routines.
When I was 18yrs I learnt how to do an ‘L-Sit’ and that became my party trick (I now teach people how to achieve an L-Sit) but I didn’t take it any further...
...Fast-forward to 2020 and having invested in my own training studio, I started working with a new client who wanted me to help develop his strength and focus on bodyweight training - specifically achieving an L-Sit.
Having not thought about any gymnastic training for a long time, I suddenly needed to bring myself up to speed and in doing so I’ve re-discovered how amazing bodyweight training is. As a result of my new client asking how he could achieve a specific move, I've spent time practising old routines and progressions and researching and learning new gymnastic exercises and techniques.
At the moment I’m working on two different gymnastics exercises: (1) the Front Lever - a deceptively simple gymnastic exercise that requires considerable core strength; (2) Planche - an advanced move requiring extensive shoulder strength.
More on both moves and my “progressions” soon...
